BookTok recs are built for the first swipe. Annotated rereads are built for the second pass. If you are filling a dark fantasy TBR in mid-September, those two jobs are not the same video.
A rec is a handshake. Thirty seconds, a cover, three comps, a caption that says the vibe is blood and weather. That is useful. It is also incomplete. The videos that actually change what people finish are the ones where someone opens a used copy and argues with a line they already underlined.
What a rec is doing
A rec has to travel. It has to name a mood fast enough that a stranger will save it. Campus gothic, morally gray, found family, enemies who share a road. The language is a filing system for the algorithm, not a map of the book.
That is why so many September recs still look like candlelight even when the stack is frontier weather. Lighting is cheaper than plot. A clean hardcover photographs. A clause does not.
None of that makes recs dishonest. It makes them first sentences. Treat them as first sentences and you will not be angry when the chapter work starts.
What an annotated reread is doing
Watch the videos where the camera stays on a page that has already been handled. A name is spelled two ways. A creature is labeled creditor, not monster. Someone dates a hush the way a clerk dates a ledger.

How to tell which video you are watching
If the book never opens, it is costume.
If it opens and the page is still white, it is costume with better lighting.
If it opens and you can see a question mark that later became the plot, you are in the read.
You do not need to film the mess. You need to know whether the creator has done the mess. Dark fantasy that cannot survive a pencil is merch.
What belongs on a September TBR
Put recs on the maybe list. Put annotated rereads on the night you actually have. If a creator can show you a map they have already disagreed with, that book will hold when the feed moves on.
